Overview

The Houston Chronicle's Best of the Best is a city-wide readers' choice programme: Houstonians nominate and then vote for their favourite businesses across more than 150 categories, and the winners are revealed at the Chronicle's annual awards event. Snapix produced the photo experience for that night. This case study covers what makes an awards floor different from a party, and how we built for it.

The Brief: Everyone in the Room Is a Winner

An awards night inverts the usual photo-booth problem. At a corporate party you are competing for attention. At Best of the Best, every guest in the room has just been named among the best in Houston at what they do - and they arrive already wanting a photograph that says so. Demand is not the challenge. Throughput and consistency are. Dozens of winning businesses, most of them in groups, all wanting their moment inside the same reception window.

Why the Vogue Booth Suits an Awards Floor

We specified the Vogue Photo & Video Booth because it produces a portrait a business will actually use. Editorial lighting and a proper backdrop set give a clean, professional image that a winning company can put straight onto its website, its window, or its own social feed. That matters more here than novelty. A silly photo is a nice memory; a well-lit portrait of a team on the night they were named best in Houston becomes a marketing asset they keep using for a year.

Working Inside a Fixed Run of Show

An awards ceremony has an unforgiving shape - reception, programme, then a rapid thin-out once the awards are handed over. The photo experience has to do the bulk of its work in the reception window and stay available for the surge immediately after the announcements. We staffed and positioned accordingly: sited where arriving guests meet the room rather than off in a side corridor, with an attendant moving groups through quickly without making anyone feel processed.

Branding That Belongs to the Client, Not to Us

Every frame carried a Chronicle-branded overlay designed for the event. When a winning business posted its photo - and they did, immediately - the Chronicle's branding travelled with it into that business's own audience. For an awards programme, that is the whole return. The paper's recognition gets amplified by the very businesses being recognised, in their own voice, to their own customers.

A Higher Bar, Because the Client Publishes

Working with a media organisation raises the standard on image quality, because the client is in the business of publishing images. Framing, exposure and colour have to hold up next to the paper's own editorial photography rather than merely look fun on a phone. Snapix has worked alongside the Houston Chronicle as one of a number of prominent Houston and national institutions, and that is exactly the standard we build to.

The Impact

Honorees left with a professional portrait in hand within seconds of stepping out of the booth. The Chronicle got a night that photographed well and an overlay circulating across 150-plus categories' worth of winning businesses. And Snapix's own credentials in this space are a matter of public record: we were named Best Nationwide Event Photo Booth Company in 2025 by Best of Best Review.

“Our winners came off the awards floor and went straight to the booth - the portraits looked like editorial, and our branding went out that night through the businesses we had just recognised.”
